Did you hear the latest example of Don Imus' utter lack of social graces? First the dude wears a cowboy hat around like he's freaking John Wayne-or, I guess Gene Wilder from Blazing Saddles would be more appropriate-and then he somehow manages to wrangle a job on talk radio despite being less coherent than Mushmouth from the old Fat Albert cartoon. Now Don Imus has the gall or balls or gumption or stupidity to refer to African-African members of a college basketball teams as "nappy headed hos" on air. Since the only people who actually listen to Don Imus are NASCAR-watching, beer-swilling, gun-totin', Bush-voting walking lobotomy patients, I can only assume that he thought nobody with more than half a brain left in his head would hear this terminology and be offended.

Most definitions of "nappy" that I have found agree that the term is used almost exclusively to describe hair that tightly coiled or curled and unkempt. Almost undoubtedly that does describe some of the black girls on that team. It is beyond a shadow of a doubt, however, that nappy headed describes Don Imus to a tee. I mean, just look at the guy. Talk about your irony, or your potbelly calling the kettle black. Don Imus' hair almost makes that fright wig that Phil Spector wore in court last year look dainty. Yeah, that nappy haired ho Don Imus has some kind of nerve insulting someone based on their hair. It would be the same kind of deal if I took some guy to task for having a big nose.

Mr. Imus looks like he graduated from the Andy Rooney school of eyebrow grooming.

Ok. Lets clear this up with some historical background-pissed off obviously isn't of the cultured intelligence of a decent human being. Nappy-Head is a phrase used as a let down to Blacks (not African-Americans..we were born in the US) during the times of slavery. It was to elevate the social status of the white man. As time grew it became a let down amongst black americans towards each other to denote class or skin color amongst the white man. Why the flip do you think Madame CJ walker came up with straightening hair care products?! Oh, wait! Let me guess...she was bored and didn't feel like working in the fields...i swear, some people are so ignrant. Pissed Off, before you open your mouth, try doing some research. Obviously you have internet access-its bad enough to see that you were actually so lazy that you couldn't click on the mouse to research what you said before you said it. Maybe you should rename yourself IGNORANT...btw pissed-off is actually a slang term moron which means i

I'm sick & tired of the bullshit! If your black, you can say honkey, Ho, cracker, spic, beaner, kike, Use prases like that jigaboo Al Sharpton used "Jewin' Up"! But if you're some schlepp like Imus, and you use "DEROGATORY" phrases like he did, then you get fired. I AM SICK OF ALL THIS BIGGOTRY! Ther are good blacks & good whites & good Latinos. Then you have SPICS, CRACKERS & NIGGERS (Sharpton, Jackson, Obama, Hugley, Chappelle, ETC.ETC.) TO HELL WITH ALL OF YOU RACIST BASTARDS! FREEDOM OF SPEECH IS EXACTLY THAT! DON'T LIKE TO HEAR IT, CHANGE THE CHANNEL!

The real problem here is surely the whole "gangsta" culture propagated by black men who wish to move out of the ghetto at the expense of their brethren, and multicoloured music executives who encourage them to do just that. When children of all colours are idolising these fools who call themselves niggaz and boast about treating bitches like ho's and murdering people, and when young kids vie with each other to be the most bona fide "mean" (read devoid of any dignity or culture)it should be no surprise to anyone that these types of phrases pollute our airwaves.

You're right. It would be EXACTLY "the same kind of deal if you took some guy to task for having a big nose". No more, no less. What IS "more egregious", however, is the fact that you ASSUME he is referring only to black members of the team. Or the fact that you now assume that, since the cat is out of the bag, it is okay to call just anybody a "nappy-headed ho" (including Imus). Yes, Imus is an ass. Yes, he overstepped the line of sensibility in attacking a group of people who are not regularly in the public eye (although no one put a gun to their heads and forced them to play college basketball). The real problem is all the writers and news reporters who are blowing the story WAY out of proportion and making (completely incorrect) assumptions in order to sensationalize a story (for profit's sake) that should not be able to get any traction otherwise. Broadcast news and the print media are quickly becoming extinct. Online news outlets are jockeying for position in a war

You were doing pretty good until your last line. Why did you have to end it by stereotyping supermodels?? Geez. Have we not learned anything here people?

I won't be watching MSNBC for a while...here is my take... http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/208872/imus_calls_rutgers_girls_nappy_headed.html

love that last line Daniel lol. The big problem with education funding is that the fed govt has cut overall funding to states, cities, and towns dramatically over the last 40 years which has to be made up locally. I remember that Staples commercial where the teacher had to buy all these supplies for her kids and the office chain came through with low prices. The whole time I was thinking "why aren't people bitching at their govt leaders about this problem?" Hehe sometimes I wonder if maybe it's best if we all just fight each other and let the nukes fly so we can start over. But then again, we'd probably be right back where we are now at some point. :)

Maybe we could use some of this spewage towards a beneficial outcome though, because we do need to reduce ball teams and players financial rewards and give that extra money straight to education... teachers can barely make a living...but a grown man who plays with balls for a living lives like royalty...I have a BIG ASSED problem with that...

So, references to our hair configuration is how we become beer swilling bush voting....etc, etc, etc? I am certainly glad you cleared up that perplexing question for us, Timothy. That will surely help our elite get us all categorized and pigeon holed. What do we do with the ones who drink Budweiser? How 'bout the straight hairs who don't vote...oh, yeah, what is wrong with "nappy hair"? You make it sound like there is something wrong with that?

Posted on 04/08/2007 at 8:04:00 PM

That last question perplexes me, too.

I also never understood the draw, or why anyone would listen to Don Imus. And that MSNBC televises his mumblings in the mornings is beyond me.
