April 6, 2007 - Jack Whittaker believes that his life has been cursed since he won the jackpot Powerball lottery in 2002. Jack Whittaker told ABC News 20/20 in an interview that he wished he had torn up the lottery ticket. Because of the ticket his life has been cursed and ruined. (ABC News 20/20 interview) Is he cursed like the actor on TV Show Lost?

So what has happened in Jack's life? The first consequence of the incredible lottery win was the huge number of people reaching out to Jack Whittaker for help. He would shortly build churches for the community. There was so much mail and so many requests that a foundation was set up specifically for requests and needs. It is reported that an average of 10 hours a day was spent just opening up mail alone. "Whittaker gave away over $50 million in houses, cars and cash." (ABC News 20/20 interview)

Whittaker operated and ran a very successful construction business prior to the Powerball jackpot lottery winnings. Even though he started from humble beginnings, Whittaker was making several million with his construction business. Yet, after the Powerball jackpot lottery winnings, he has been forced to fend off lawsuits against his construction company. According to Whittaker's lawyer there are 400 claims against the jackpot winner's construction company. (ABC News 20/20 interview) Prior to the curse from the lottery, Whittaker did not have lawsuits against his very reputable company.

Later, Whittaker would turn to alcohol to drown his worries and sense of impending doom. His experiences at bars and other places were horrible, including being robbed. Again, this further confirmation to Whittaker that he was cursed by the jackpot winnings.

Spreading his good wealth, he gave money, cars and a house to his granddaughter. Later, he would find out that the money and wealth bestowed to his granddaughter from the lottery winnings would draw the attention of drug dealers. His beloved granddaughter ended up on drugs from suddenly becoming wealthy. Later, his granddaughter would disappear. She was found dead and wrapped in a plastic bag.

Love of money is the root of all evil. He may need to choose something else to love. Thanks for a great article.

I missed this interview but I have seen this man on TV and in print in the past discussing his many problems he feels stem from his sudden wealth. I didn't know about his grand daughter's death. It is tragic. I still wouldn't mind it if someone gave me that much money to see what would happen to me and my family!

Great title, really caught my eye and i don't even watch LOST. Hehe. I saw the interview with this guy. It was amazing. The poor guy. He was just being a good person giving to people who needs help. It shows how they are people in this world who take advantage of nice people. Great article. Bye

This was so sad. But, I still want to win a lottery!

Well, I'm sure it was in his car for him to dip into after the thousands he had on his person paid the rent for gaggles of topless dancers. No curse here, just terrible judgement. And too bad.

The drinking part was his own choice.

I am from the area that he is from and can tell you that his actions are what brought him the majority of his misfortune. It is really sad because he was successful before he won the lottery. For a while, our evening news was led most every night with a story about his latest arrest or lack of judgement. His life has turned into a tragedy that I would not wish on my worst enemy.

I saw this him on 20/20 too. Money changes people, and it's a shame that it changed his family so much.

Kind of remind me of the old saying: be careful what you wish for. Excellent article.
