Before making any claims, I must first say that I believe the basic idea behind feminism is to achieve equality between women and the rest of society, males in particular. I do not disagree that the cause is a worthy one, but I began to get curious about a few things that do not seem to be mentioned often by feminists. Although we have learned that gender discrimination clearly exists, we have not discussed the positive aspects of it. Yes, discrimination is discrimination, but can discrimination also benefit people?By no means am I saying discrimination is right, I am simply attempting to explore the results of gender discrimination in America. While it obviously cannot be said for every female, I would argue that most women in America are not offended when doors are opened for them, chairs are pulled out, or the bill is paid for by the male, for example. Yes, these examples are little things, and they do not make up for the greater evils of sexism, however they still do exist.
Another curiosity is the speeding ticket. I tried to find out the percentage of women who get pulled over that actually get a ticket. Though I could find no scientific data, I did come across this website: http://www.nationalsummary.com/Articles/Miscellaneous/misc__women_preferential.htm
The stories told there tend to agree with the assumption that women often do not get a ticket whereas a male would. When asked if they got preferential treatment, several of the women admitted to being pulled over ten or fifteen times and getting only a single ticket. Yet again, you do not hear of very many women complaining about this. I cannot say that I would complain either; however, is this not discrimination as well?
Just as women have a better chance of getting out of a speeding ticket, they are also generally treated better and forgiven easier in a multitude of situations. Women are not expected to mow lawns, shovel snow, etc. In an accident, a woman is much less likely to get yelled at by the other person than a man. In general, people will be much more polite and more forgiving about almost anything with women.
