The Safety Kids Vol. 2 Stay Safe From Drugs program is a great way to teach elementary school aged children the dangers of drugs and alcohol without becoming overbearing. It doesn't just tell children what not to do, instead it also gives children ideas on what to do instead of drugs to make themselves feel better. The program is taught on a CD with catchy upbeat songs and a Sing-Along Activity book that children can use to go along with the CD. My children love it and find it very entertaining, which is a relief to me because I don't think I could ever explain and teach it as well on my own.
The very first song called "If Your Friend's in Trouble" teaches children what to do if they have a close friend who has gone down the path of drugs and they are concerned for their safety.
The second song "Safety Kid Smart" helps a child to feel empowered by being a Safety Kid and helps give them the inner-strength to say No to drugs. My 4 & 6 year old sing this song quite a bit.
There is dialog between all the songs where the Safety Kids are having a meeting discussing topics about drugs and alcohol. It is great for children to hear it coming from other children instead of just getting it from authority figures such as parents. This helps them feel as though they are being offered advice from a friend as opposed to being told what to do by an adult.
The third song "Go For a Natural High" tells children to get out and be active when they are feeling down and depressed. That they have many choices and resources outside of themselves to reach for help in feeling better so they wont feel like their only option is to turn to drugs for relief.
The fourth song "It's Bad, Bad Stuff" deals with peer pressure and how someone can feel when surrounded by people who want them to do something they don't want to.
The fifth song "All You Gotta Say Is No" tells children to say no and get away from the situation. I know saying No is a bit cliche, but it is really the only thing that truly works. It also shares different ways to say no, such as the classic no, the repeated no, the in-charge no and the laughing no.
