There was a time when there were twelve soap operas on the three major networks. Now with the soon to be cancel Passions, there will only be eight soap operas left on the major networks. In the last five years all the soap operas have suffered a ratings decline. I will look at the reasons why there is such a ratings decline and I will also look at ways that the soaps can regain their former glory.

There are several reasons why the ratings have gone down for soap operas in the last several years. First, with more people working, especially women, which is who soap operas were originally aim toward, people just don't have the time to sit and watch their favorite shows during the day.

Another reason for the ratings decline, is when soap operas originally made their television debut, there were only a few channels on television. The soaps did not have much competition in their time slots, except against each other. Today, people can select from over 200 channels, and have many different options of what they can watch on television.

Back in 1995, when the O.J. Simpson trail was all over the television, the soap operas were preempted due to the trail. Because of the length of the trail and all the preemptions, people begin to do other things with their time. Once the trail was over and the soap operas return to their regular schedule, some of their fans had lost interest in the soaps, and soap operas have continue to struggle to regain their old fan base.

Soap operas are also losing viewers because some of the storylines are either way over the top or just not very interesting. Soap operas are now working with a smaller budget, so they are also firing some of their veteran actors, who have been with their respective shows for years, and who had many fans who have been invested in their characters for years.

i think it's because they keep dragging things on, like for example in passions. Ethan still didn't find out about Gwen and her mother telling the tabloids that Ethan wasn't a Crane and when Ethan finally realizes Teresa was the one for him the show was canceled. When situations get dragged on too much in soaps people louse interest and ratings go low. I was a big fan of passions but i stopped watching the show for that reason. When i would get my hopes up and think the truth will be revealed it never does and at first when that happens i understand because soaps have to make fans excited to continue watching the show but when it keeps going on for years it's just a disappointment.

I like Soapnet as well. I like the NBC soaps, Days of Our Lives and Passions. Passions is now cancelled and only with Direct TV on the 101. I would like to continue to watch NBC shows on Soapnet as well as the now exclusive 101 show Passions. The story line is far fetched for Passions, but I really like watching the show and want to be able to watch on a regular basis what is going on with Thereasa and the rest of the Harmony crew. I think if the airtimes are more in line with when people are returning home from their day of work (7PM), and wanting to relax this will increase the viewer ratings. I don't think that its viable to air shows late at night, because that is again during the times that the working are getting ready for bed or in bed getting ready for the next work day. Thereby still preventing interested viewers from watching the shows. Also, Soapnet airs the ABC shows back to back and I don't like that.

I could not agree more. I would LOVE to listen to the podcast at work. I know CBS.com has made GL and As the World Turns avialable on Podcast. But I would rather listen to older ones from the late 70's and 80's than todays.

Soapnet is a very good point. Having Sopanet available to people has given all the ABC soaps a big boost recently, especially OLTL, which i've noticed has jumped back to a consistent #4 spot recently. The networks need to look at the potential this gives, and do more to distinguish the shows and make them more relevant for today's viewers. The reason why Days Of Our Lives was such a huge hit a few years ago was that, despite being ludicrous and over-the-top, it was so different and exciting, people had to tune in. If the other sopas can do something to make their shows different and not copy whatever's trendy as they did with Days and GH in the 80s, THEN the genre will flourish once again.

Basically, I think its the poor writing. They are losing long time fans due to the pimping of characters no one actually cares about and firing vet actors.
