Simplicity Bassinet Recall Continues After Two More Deaths

An August 2008 Recall of Simplicity Bassinets Has Been Re-Announced After Two More Deaths

Simplicity bassinet recall going into overdrive. A Simplicity bassinet recall is being re-announced by the Consumer Product Safety Commission after the Simplicity bassinets have been linked to two more recent infant deaths. There was a Simplicity bassinet recall back in August of 2008, but apparently not enough people were aware of the recall, or not everyone using the Simplicity bassinet was educated about the importance of returning a recalled product. Two more infants have died because of the ill-constructed Simplicity bassinet, and that has prompted the Consumer Product Safety Commission to act once again in this case.

The problem with the Simplicity bassinets has been that the bassinet has metal bars that are spaced farther apart than federal standards allow. The Commission stated in their report, that if Velcro-attached fabric covers metal bars on the bassinet is attached improperly, a pocket can be created where children can become trapped. Even without the fabric, the Commission stated that children can become stuck between the bassinet's metal bars, leading to it being an even greater risk as a children's product, and thus leading to the extensive recall of the Simplicity bassinets back in August 2008.

The two most recent deaths associated with the Simplicity bassinet involved a 2-month-old girl from Demorest, Georgia and a 6-month-old girl from Fort Worth when one was trapped between the two bars and the other was trapped in the pocket of fabric. Two other reports were submitted where a 10-week-old and a 3-month-old were trapped between the bassinet's lower bar and the mattress, but those infants were freed without injury. The two recent Simplicity bassinet deaths raise the total to four that have died from the Simplicity bassinets. With the latest information provided to the Commission, they deemed it necessary to issue a second recall of the product in order to try and make sure everyone sees it.

An extensive Simplicity bassinet recall has been undertaken by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
