Madonna and the Black Eyed Peas are among the music acts expected to perform at the Live Earth Concert in London on July 7. The concert is intended to raise awareness about climate change, according to organizers. Other acts joining the concert include the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Snow Patrol, Keane, Genesis, and Duran Duran. Event organizers also on Tuesday announced a full lineup that will include Bloc Party, Corinne Bailey Rae, the Beastie Boys, David Gray, Damien Rice, James Blunt, Paolo Nutini, the Foo Fighters, and John Legend. The full lineup will have more than 100 acts hitting the stage.
The concert will be built on the model Bob Geldof used for the Live 8 concerts in 2005, which was an anti-poverty concert series. Live Earth will be held in London, New Jersey, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro, Johannesburg, Tokyo, and Sydney.
"This monster line-up will ensure Live Earth meets our goal of bringing together people from around the world to combat the climate crisis," said Live Earth founder Kevin Wall. "Live Earth will not only span all seven continents, but the musicians who have answered our call span multiple genres and generations."
The New Jersey venue in the U.S. was announced Tuesday after some Republicans did not like Al Gore's suggestion to hold one of the concerts on U.S. Capitol Grounds in Washington.
"By attracting an audience of billions, we hope Live Earth will launch a global campaign giving a critical mass of people around the world the tools they need to help solve the climate crisis," Gore said in a statement. "But ultimately, corporations and governments must become global leaders taking decisive action to stop global warming."
Gore's climage change documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" won an Oscar this year and he is at the front of efforts to recruit the pop music crowd to his climate cause.
Registration for tickets to the July 7 London concert is from April 13 to 16 on the concert's website (www.livenation.co.uk/liveearth).
The concerts are part of a global publicity drive on climate chance, called Save Our Selves (SOS). The drive is lead by former U.S. Vice President Al Gore.
