Missouri Apple Festivals in Versailles, Kimmswick and Mount Vernon

Missouri is replete with fall time festivals to honor harvest time in the crossroads of American and the gateway to the West. Nothing says fall time like apples and apple picking. Whether these orchards came from Johnny Appleseed or from a tree planted ten years ago, Missouri is proud of its apple heritage.

Here are three apple festivals that will have your blood running apple red.

The most famous of Missouri's apple festivals is the Versailles Olde Tyme Apple Festival. Purported to bring 30,000 visitors to Lake of the Ozarks, this year's one day festival is on October 3, 2009. Held since 1980, the Apple Festival has a parade at 10 A.M. and everything apples afterwards. Food, live music, and games for the kids run all day in downtown Versailles.

To get to Versailles (pronounced Ver-Sales in Missouri, since Missourians don't speak French), take U.S. 54 west from Jefferson City to State Highway 52. Go west on 52 until you get to Versailles. From Springfield, get on U.S. 65 and go north past Lincoln, Missouri, and turn east onto Highway 52 and go until you get to Versailles.

Kimmswick in Jefferson County south of St. Louis holds an annual Apple Butter Festival. This year's festival held in a charming town just off the Mississippi River is expecting close to 100,000 visitors between October 24th and 25th this year. Hundreds of booths will be there between 10 and 5 both days selling food and crafts.

The entire town will be shut down during the festival hours both days, so the only way in or out is with a shuttle or people power. By far Jefferson County's largest festival, make sure to indulge in everything apple butter and take home a jar.

Contests, cooking, activities for the kids, and food, food, and more food will be here.
