Fear. Death. Satan. Hauntings....these are all words that describe the place I went to years ago with my husband in Stull, Kansas. It used to be known as "Skull," Kansas

Rumors have it that when "TIME" magazine asked Pope John Paul II why he had his plane fly around Kansas he said it was because he didn't want to fly over unholy ground. His aids later alluded to Stull Cemetery.

"Stull Cemetery is rumored in Occult books to be one of only a few places in the world where Satan will manifest himself in full form, and that happens once a year at midnight on Halloween. Its also rumored that one of the seven gates of hell will open its gate in this location. The legend also continues saying that the reason why Satan will visit these grounds is because his son is buried somewhere in it. The burned down church is believed to be the actual gate way between hell and earth, and even though the roof is now gone it is said that no rain will touch the ground inside the walls of the church. There are also rumors of Occultist meeting there and performing satanic rituals, and steps inside the church that go down to nowhere these steps where not part of the blueprints found in the city archive. It is said that one can go down the stairs and come back up weeks later even though it seems to the person that only seconds had passed." Ghostbusters.com

Such stories make strange people come out of the woodwork in search of anything weird that might manifest. The truth is, no one really has seen anything. No proof exists that the place is "haunted."

okay 1st of all i have lived in the county where stull cemetery is. my father lived with the Stull family growing up and helped them on their farm in the 60's. skull is only a nickname. however i do not know if it is truly one of the seven gates. I was a teen in the 80's and my friends would try 2 get me2 go there for halloween. I am a firm believer in the supernatural n the police & never would go. as 2 go as far 2 say it's not haunted no one can say if they haven't personally experienced it.

As part of a ghost hunting trip I made up for spring break me and a few buddies went on a road trip and stopped in Stull. We are from Calgary, Alberta so it was really cool to see the history. I can't lend any creedence to the rumors but I can say that the place was spooky and I can understand the feelings of negativity you were feeling there. I had enough time to stop and take pictures of the cemetary outside the fence before the three of us had to run back to the car as a large Rotweiler came barrelling down the road for us. The dog repeatedly ran in front of our car as we were pulling out making us stop and once even jumped on our hood. Nothing supernatural about it, I personally think someone let it out to chase us out of town. Scared the shit out of all of us though and we wern't tresspassing or anything.

I'm from Topeka, and I've been to Stull many times in the 80's, before the internet buzz about it. Back then, it was just one of the inevitable places around which rumors seem to generate: A creepy old cemetery with an old, gothic church in ruins right off a very dangerous 2 lane highway. I have read that the chirch is now totally demolished without a trace. The story about the pope/plane is an urban legend.

How scary! I'm interested in places that are said to be haunted, but that's a place I wouldn't want to visit. Anything involving the occult scares me. No wonder you felt so much negative energy there. Interesting article.
