Deserving
Rubbing fireflies on your wrist,
a shiny gold bracelet in the dark.
A lesson in futility, knocking on your father's door,
a very different reception from his beautiful wife
than you'd hoped for.
Dreaming of belonging,
Shuffled from households filled with laughter,
on the outside, always looking in.
Afflicted, a face of acne, legs like sticks,
A surprise while fishing, you catch a man of war.
Cruel and cold, but the price you'll pay for love.
Years later, standing taller,
you walk away,
becoming suddenly more beautiful.
Unexpectedly,
lightning strikes,
perfect electricity,
a shiny gold ring, and the light.
