Dr. Phil Said that Children Are Watching More Hours of Television Than They Spend in School

Dr. Phil on his tip for the day said that American children watch more television by the time they reach 18 than they spend at school. It is not just how much they watch, it is what they watch th
at is dangerous. Considering that he makes his living by having the Dr. Phil show on television I suppose he could be hurting himself.

Now with the internet and video games there is even more time that is spent on these activities that can be unhealthy. It is important to monitor the time that our children spend on the computer, playing video games and watching television. I have a hard time with that, because I spend a lot of time on the computer, but I do it to make money, so I justify it.

He said that it is good to use television as a diversion and as entertainment, I might add for self-help, news, and education, but that we need to remember that life is not a spectator sport, it is meant to be lived. We also can get in to trouble when we compare our lifes and our bodies to those of people that we see on television. It is easy to get into a fantasy about how real people live. When we see people who are beautiful, young, thin and well dressed who live in perfect houses or have the perfect mates it can set us up for dissapointment. It can also confuse our kids who look to us to provide for them all that they see on television.

I for one love to watch television. I am more into the Dr. Phil and Oprah shows. I also love Rachael Ray and the cooking channels. If I am honest I love to watch the Lifetime movies. I spend time in front of the television when I do laundry and in the afternoon, running back and forth from the kitchen preparing dinner catching these three television shows. I flip back and forth between Rachael, Phil, Oprah and Montel. This is my time which is constantly interrupted but I still try to get to watch these shows.

It is educational but can also be addictive and an escape from reality.

I don't watch much television at all. I see so many reviews and different info about shows on TV here on AC and sometimes feel weird that I can't comment because I have never seen the show or in some cases never heard of the show.

People were so amazed by his brillance, and it is all just common sense, scarey that we have come to that. I too like and agree with him on most things. Iffy on the Donna Hogan thing which should be published soon that I wrote. Thanks for commenting.

Interesting article! I think Dr. Phil, who I highly respect, is just trying to get people to balance out their lives a little, rather than be addicted to just one or two things. Children especially need this balance, more than ever!

Very good advice. I also like Oprah, Dr. Phil, and Rachael Ray. I prefer informative t.v. shows such as those over sit-coms, but I don't watch a lot of t.v. I'm either too busy writing articles or getting my house ready to sell. Great info as usual!
