An Open Letter to Don Imus

If you have not heard the first three words of my title in the past few days, then you have truly been living under a rock. Story Here:

I want to address Don Imus directly in this letter to explain why this insult is as damaging and degrading as it is. I want to get right down to the insult and break down the words used in the insult, nappy headed ho's.

Nappy, according to Dictionary.com means "fuzzy, kinky," used in colloquial or derogatory referring to the hair of black people. Likewise, Nappy headed according to Urbandictionary.com is a term used to describe someone (typically of African descent) who possesses tightly coiled, very curly hair. It also means an African or African American or anyone of African descent who wears that hair natural and has one of the many textures of woolly-like (nappy) hair.

Therefore, no matter how you cut it, "nappy headed" is a derogatory insult specifically geared toward blacks. The problem with the term, nappy headed, is that it should not be an insult. You see, after generations and generations of black women hiding, processing, and altering our hair lest someone spy a "nap" on our heads, many black women, including myself have returned to our roots so to speak. We are natural (nappy) and loving it. After decades of relearning that as black women that the hair that grows out of our heads in the state that is grows is beautiful, we are reminded why we grew to hair our natural hair in the first place. It hurts for in one moment, in one "slip of the tongue", in one callous remark, many young women who do not understand how beautiful they are once again, reaching for their headscarves.

Now, let us look at the word ho's, whether you refer to hardcore ho's or nappy headed ho's, a ho is a whore. Urban dictionary.com defines the word ho as a prostitute, whore, hooker, tramp, and slut. Even worse than that, a whore is a woman who uses her body, or gives the impression that her mark can be intimate with her, for material gain or to boost her own ego. A whore is a prostitute. No, Mr. Imus, a Ho is not just a word from Santa Claus; it is the absolute worst of insults you can bestow on a young woman.

Imus said the girls were ugly. McQuirk said "they look like 'ho's" to which Imus made his now famous comment. They then went on to compare the two teams to two teams from a Spike Lee movie. They did not name the correct one. Imus spends time with African-Americans doing his chairty work. It is entirely possible that he did not realize he was over-stepping a "white" man's bounds. I liken it to a "Yo Mama" joke. Coming from a "black" person they are funny, coming from a "white" person, it could be called racist, even if the person was only trying to be funny.

Imus has been insulting politicians, journalists, etc. for several decades, but this time he chose to insult a group of 10 college students--five of whom were in high school a year ago--who've done nothing to deserve Mr. Imus's comments. Fortunately the meeting between Imus and the team seemed to really clear the air, and Imus seems genuinely sorry. Even the Rutgers coach asked people to quit beating up on him (and to stop sending hate mail to the team). Maybe Imus can find another radio job interviewing newsmakers, which he seems to be good at, and give up on the offensive stuff.

Nappy Head is a term of endearment..all this media craze has done is bring this predominately black term to the attention of every stinking body who hadn't heard it and on top of that .. turned it into a slur. Nappy head is not like the word nigger, sorry. Imus should not have had that coming out of his mouth, but all this media frenzy has only added this, before unknown word by non blacks, to many non blacks vocabulary as a slur. If any part of what he said should've been focused on it was the ho part. But nah.. Sharpton wouldn't be able to get enough attention for that. He had to make it (as always) a racial thing.

What's up with you hypocritical sycophants? (Now's the time to crack out that dictionary. Everyone knows what nappy headed hos are. Those words have been taught to us by such esteemed citizens of our society like Chappelle, Limp Bizkit, and the Ying Yang Twins just to mention a few.)It's not like Imus killed or raped one of those players. They still have the opportunity to make a difference in this society. Use his criticism as fuel to win the Championship (that nobody watched this year or will watch next year) next year. I understand it hurts, but racial epithets are a part of life that every ethnicity must deal with not only the blacks. Think of all the times when you were a kid and you called the Asian looking guy, "Jackie Chan" or mocked his language by saying words that rhyme with -ong or -ing.

I wrote about a documentary entitled...MY NAPPY ROOTS. For anyone that might want a historical perspective of this, you might want to check out the article and then the documentary.

I can understand the offense taken from this moron's comment, but does it really merit the national outrage, demands for resignation, and media firestorm (making the front page of freaking CNN)? There are racist, intolerant, and downright mean assholes out there. Personally I am more outraged that the shitstorm at the justice department or violence in Algeria has been downgraded as less-important than three words said by a grizzled old denim-phile in a radio show that is less popular than Rush Limbaugh's.

Very well done! I'm gay. Do you think that somehow we can equate the N word with the F word? I wouldn't consider using the N word...what about me?
