Doctors suggest that you do take the time to tell your child if they have a disability. Hiding it from them can often make them feel more frustrated. You may also want to include any other adults who have constant contact with your child such as grandparents. They should be made aware of what it going on in your child's life.

Together you will be able to make a decision as to whether or not it would benefit your child to tell them that they have a disability. You should not allow anyone else to influence you opinion in any way. Remember this is your child and it is therefore your decision. If your child has a severe disability they may not be able to fully comprehend what is going on, so trying to explain their disability to them may not be worth the effort. However children, who have learning disabilities, such as dyslexia, ADHD, can fully comprehend what is going on if it is explained to them in the proper way. You should make sure that you also give them plenty of support and encouragement when you are having this discussion with them. Let them know that you are there for them. This is especially important for them during their teenage years.
