No-Sew Bible Character Halloween Costumes
Religious Trick-or-Treating Costumes
Halloween is an ambiguous celebration. Some people love the spooky. Others do trick-or-treat, some harvest festivals; others, All Saint's Day parties. Here are Christian, biblical costumes for any type of Halloween party. Whether you trick-or-treat, attend a harvest festival, an All Saint's Day party or just need a religious costume, here is an easy, diy costume.You will need:
piece of fabric that is three to four times as long as it is wide; raggedy or frayed is good. For a 'green', recycle bin costume choose an old towel (for children's costume), blanket, sheet or curtain. The fabric should be brown, gray or tan. Linen, canvas, burlap, faux fur or a cotton/polyester blend works best
smaller piece of fabric three to four times wide as it is long; an gray, tan or brown towel, pillow case or scrap piece of fabric is perfect. Cut a piece from the larger piece if you have enough
long strips of fabric for tying
sandals
staff (for men and boys)
accessories and props related to Bible character: fish or net for St. Peter, Bible for St. Paul, birds for St. Francis, cross for Jesus, carpenter square for St. Joseph, tablets for Moses, a rainbow for Noah, staff for Aaron, lamb for Abraham, ladder for Jacob, baby for Sarah. Use your Bible and imagination for ideas.
To make the costume;
Fold the larger piece of fabric in half lengthwise and then in half width wise. Cut a small semi-circle at the corner fold. This will cut through all layers and make an opening for the head. This will make a poncho. Helpful Hint: begin with a small circle and enlarge the hole if it is too tight. Wear neutral colored shorts and tee-shirt under your costume
Twist and knot several fabric strips to make a belt around the waist.
For the head piece, bend over and wrap the smaller piece of fabric or towel around your head, bringing the ends together in the back of your head. Pin the ends together securely. Stand up and flip the towel over your head. Twist or braid several more strips of fabric to make a head band. Tie this around your head and tuck the ends under.
