I hadn't heard of Reflexology before my parents hired one. I found it quite interesting and decided others might like to know a little about it as well. Here is what I learned:

Reflexology in a nutshell is the applying of pressure to the hands and the feet. Stretching and movement are also involved. This is suppose to affect (or send messages to) other parts of your body. Ultimately it can help break up stress throughout the body. This is because reflexologists believe that your hands and your feet set the tension level for your body.

Reflexology has not yet been proven to help certain conditions and diseases. There are certain individuals that will swear to its benefits in helping their current illnesses, however, Scientific studies are currently being conducted and you should watch for further reports in the future.

Reflexologists are quick to point out that reflexology cannot replace the medical advice of a physician. Follow your Doctor's recommendations and just add reflexology almost like you would add exercising to your schedule.

You do not have to be an expert to start using reflexology in your home. If you would like to try a self-help book use Hand and Foot Reflexology: A Self-Help Guide. If you want to try reflexology with your children use Parent's Guide to Reflexology. Check out your local library or buy these books online.

How often are you encouraged to do reflexology? Each session lasts between 30 minutes and one hour. It is up to you how often you want to repeat the sessions. If you choose to use a reflexologist make sure he or she obeys your wishes. If they are applying too much pressure this can be harmful. You want someone who will lighten up when you ask them too. You also want to feel relaxed when the session is over. If you don't, I would suggest you look for someone else.

Takeaways
  • Reflexology applys pressure to your hands and your feet.
  • You can buy a self help book and attempt reflexology yourself.
  • Always follow your physicians advice.
