Chess is an incredible game and I wish it were taught in every elementary school in this country. It is closely linked to math skills and would hone those skills with the interesting twist of a game. It teaches strategizing, planning, patience, directed and intense concentration, and so many other d
isciplines. The game has been around for centuries. It has been played for both entertainment, recreational sport and for its great competitive nature in tournaments all over the country and the world. Some of these competitions are highly lucrative, but many of the players are just hooked on the game and are fiercely competitive by nature. Bobby Fisher's win over Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Chess championship really brought popularity to the game in this country. Fisher was a U.S. citizen. Since that time chess clubs have sprung up all over the country. Florida has more than many states. Why, I don't know, but there are a lot of eager club members from all over the state engaging in matches, refining their skills and competing for prizes and money.
Central Florida Chess Club is doing something really interesting. They are having free programs for children up to the eight grade this year. Their April Children's competition will be scheduled for April 28th. This group's purpose is to get together for competitive chess games and to enter the very lucrative competions around the state. They ask that you join their club and have the newsletter sent each month with timely news about upcoming events. There's an interesting link that features new games sent in by members for others to analyze online. There was, however, no link for joining online. Call them to see about joining if you're in the area. CFCC 813 Montana Street Orlando, Florida 32810 407-629-6946
