Today's society is big on insurance and as time goes on it seems like there new types of insurance being introduced everyday. We all have car insurance and life insurance. Many of us have dental insurance and vision insurance. We should have disability insurance, but what about long-term care insurance? What is this insurance and is it necessary?

Basically, long-term care insurance policies cover what other insurances will not cover. Medical insurance, Medicare and Medicaid will cover certain portions of your stay in long-term care and these traditional types of insurance will only cover certain types of long-term care. After this is when your long-term care policy will come into play.

As you get older, long-term care will give you more options if you are not able to live on your own. Where traditional insurance does not pay for assisted living, long-term care insurance will pay for this type of care. If you do not have long-term care insurance, you may be force to go into a full service nursing home when, physically, you may not need care to that extent.

There are some policies that will pay for in home care and private duty nurses. For the relatives of a person that requires that type of care this can be great relief and also a source of security. They can be assured that their loved one is being cared for in the comfort of their own home. Long-term care insurance also helps relieve concerns about how such help would otherwise be paid for.

Long-term care insurance can also protect your assets. This insurance will keep the state from being able to take your home in order to be able to pay for your care. It will also provide a means of paying for this care that will not require you to use your savings before the state will assist you in paying for long-term care. Long-term care also keeps the family from having to find the financial means to keep a relative in a long-term care facility.
