Volunteer at the upcoming San Francisco Step It Up Expo and Rally celebrating earth-friendly transit.

The event (Lighten Up Your Ride Clean Car Expo) is being held April 14th at 11 a.m. at Sports Basement Presidio across from Crissy Field, 610 Mason Street. A vegetable-oiled van will shuttle people from downtown. The easiest zero-carbon way to get to the event is on a bike and the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition will offer valet bike parking.

In other environmental news, Earth Justice is urging citizens to oppose liquid coal, calling it a "global warming nightmare." It produces double the carbon dioxide emissions of conventional gasoline and would be a huge step backward for efforts to combat global warming, reps say.

In unrelated environmental news, The Fort Worth, TX activist group 1919 Hemphill recommends cutting animal products out of your diet, turning off appliances when you're not using them, switching your electric provider to an all-renewable plan, driving less, carpooling more, and using more public and people-powered transportation.

In Tarrant County, TX, TXU Energy has been acquired by private investors after a buyout, meaning a ten percent cut in electricity rates and a reduction in the number of coal plants planned to be built.

"TXU has increased electricity rates by thirty percent in the past two years," said resident Judith Spencer.

With the country going green, many homeowners are looking for eco-friendly materials when buying their next home, reports one website.

"The latest housing trend shows that many new homebuilders are constructing 'green' homes," states 365gay.com. "For those consumers in older, existing homes, there are many easy, affordable and immediate steps they can take to make their home more environmentally friendly."

Some of those suggestions include lowering the temperature of your thermostat, repairing leaky faucets, buying appliances with the Energy Star rating, and selecting renewable resources when purchasing flooring products.
