They are both two years old

and they are both adorable-

her with the blonde curls

and him with the dimples.

I am told that all children are innocent

but I doubt this.

He falls over a toy and she laughs

just a bit too loudly-

I give her a disapproving look.

Later, when she yanks a book out of his hands,

he cries but does not retaliate.

I, of course, treat her with kindness-

she's just a child, after all-

and that's what I'm getting paid to do.

But as I fix them their snacks, I wonder-

what kind of a person will she grow up to be?

He's crying again- she has stolen his snack

and is now reveling in her victory.

Innocent? Please!

I take her entire snack away from her

and give him some extra cookies.

When she begins to cry, I smile.

Sweet revenge.

"Sorry, little girl. Life isn't fair, is it?"
