If you have ever suffered from deep depression, the "black hole" feeling, the feeling of helplessness, the feeling of hopelessness, you are not alone. Statistics show that over 17 million American adults experience a clinical depression. Depression can affect anyone, and it can change how you think and feel. Depression is a very real pain, not understood by those who have never "walked in our shoes". Depression is an illness. As with other illnesses, you cannot heal from depression by doing it alone. Most serious depression requires drug therapy to help you feel better. Drug therapy alone is not an instant cure, however. You can beat this illness, not alone, but with God's help.

Many Christians struggle with the use of psychiatric counseling and medication to heal depression, believing that to do so shows a lack of faith in God. As a Christian, I have a strong faith in God and a belief that He is there for us and I pray for his guidance, grace, mercy and love every day. God wants to mend our broken hearts; He wants us strong and full of His love so we can love and worship Him. Only God can heal us. If I had a brain tumor, would I not take the medication or have the operation to help cure this illness? As such, depression is an illness for which no one should be ashamed to get psychiatric counseling and medication, if needed.

I have struggled off and on with depression for many years; it is inherit in my family. As a victim of hurricane Katrina, which destroyed my hometown, I not only had to deal with depression but also developed PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder), and severe anxiety. Because of my experiences, my history of depression, and the added experience of post traumatic stress disorder, I continued to struggle each day with life, but I never gave up asking God to help me. I did not loose my faith. I continued to pray and I called on my Christian friends. God DOES work in very mysterious ways and often showed me so in small ways, and with the people he put in my path.

It is so good to hear the heartfelt comments from all of you. Although it has been a while since I concentrated on writing on AC, I am still very intrested in touching other people. For those of you that left comments but no way to reach you, please send me a personal message. I have so much I can say to you - such a desire to try and help those that may be going through what I did. Believe me when I tell you that God IS there for you.

I am preparing a presentation for a group of women dealing with depression. this article will help me so much in this discussion. I am a therapist ,praticing for over thirty plus years. I have seen what the Lord can do in the lives of those who suffer so deeply. He works through doctors, medicines and so many ways. He just shows up. If you trust Him rely on His Word He will bring you out of the pit of despair. To all who fight the battle keep trusting. Remember Christ died for us to be free. His word will keep us as we go through.

Very good article.Since God is God & His ways are higher than our ways, He can heal any way He wants to.We shouldn't try to put God in a box & limit Him to just doing things a certain way. Some issues in the Bible are spelled out for us & state that God will have the same response every time to an issue. But if it's not spelled out-we shouldn't try to put restrictions on God.He uses both the natural & the supernatural for our healing. And isn't it great that He is Big enough to take it when we are angry with Him? Have you noticed that we usually only get angry with someone that we have a real relationship with.Writing this article took a lot of courage & I will be continually lifting you up.

Are any sick among you?Go to the doctor or take a pill.No it isn't wrong to do it but it sure shows you where the church as believers is.Sad that so many miss out on exercising their faith in what they have been given due to poor teaching or seeking.I guess the faith healers on TV have hurt more then help in most cases.I will tell you this,if you try it at home alone or whatever, even if it seems stupid!crying aloud and saying God is doing what needs to be done, then when it's done and you realize it,you will be praising and singing so full that you will wonder why it took you so long to figure it out about faith.I pray all will be filled with the abundant life that faith can give.Big or little problems, try faith and you will love it.

I always go with the notion that prayer and medicine do mix. Only people who are ill informed or prideful would tell someone to keep suffering when they do not have to. Take the medicine, deal with the issues that led to the depression, and move on.

Nice article! I need medication to manage my depression, but it doesn't lessen my belief that God is with me on my daily journey.

I think turning to God in situations like this can be a lot more helpful than turning to the medical field. Great article!

Wonderful article - I think God wants us to live life abudantly, if medicine takes away it is no good, but if it helps it is a blessing.

I loved your article. I had no history of depression than when I became pregnant I got a severe depression, ( hormones effected me that way) About a month post partum it was gone, anyway at the time I wondered where God was, but looking back he was with me all along.

Great article! God and Counseling are two very powerful healers. However, too many doctors, prescribe too much medication. Please read my article "I Refused To Be A Paid Drug Pusher", it's quite enlightening to what goes on in the mental health field.
