Minsk Gay Guide: Gay Life in Belarus

Belarusians Below the Radar..

Among the former Soviet states in Eastern Europe, Belarus is the most resistant to social change, restricting gay life to private connections out of the public eye. Homosexual behavior was decriminalized in the early 1990s, but pervasive homophobia has largely squelched the gay rights
movement. Neighbors of Belarus like Russia, Poland, and Lithuania enjoy far more advanced, even if fledgling, gay life.

Minsk, the capital of Belarus, provides a tenuous, semi-safe haven for gays through an underground network of private organizations and rotating gay nights at bars and clubs. There are determined seeds of gay life in Belarus, and this brief Minsk gay guide reveals some of the basics. Gay tourists can enjoy the Minsk scene provided that they seek some inside information and remain cautious in a country with a spotty human rights record.

Small groups have attempted to organize gay pride events in Minsk, but these are rarely successful, with gay attendees either outnumbered by droves of protesters or with the government denying permits in the first place. Gay organizations and gay publications struggle to gain even basic rights from the oppressive government and recognition from the unfriendly media (Belarus is considered to have Europe’s worst freedom of the press). Thanks to persistent activists in Minsk, though, several gay websites and underground newsletters stay afloat.

Nobody needs to accept or reject anything. All they need is the FREEDOM to make that decision for themselves. In Belarus, led by the "last dictator in Europe" there is no such freedom of information or press. Oppression is something every decent person should be fundamentally against. Apparently, for people like Brian up there - dictatorship and restriction of rights is something to cheer. For shame.

Wouldn't that be western liberalism, to allow peope to not encourage or publicy not accept? Western liberalism gives people the option to either accept or reject. This commentator sounds like Belarus is some giant monolith that is uncorrupted and better off because people espouse toward being some totalitarian monolith. Belarus isn't just about rejecting gays, but about accepting each and every person who makes up a unique part of Belarus be they gay or straight. I don't know what religion or philosophy would make someone so adamant to cheer such ideas as that everyone should live and act the same. Im sure that is not belarus. When you go to belarus, people think and act in unique manners just as they do anywhere. Here here that there are those who flaunt being gay just as there are those who protest it. That to me seems like western liberalism, where belarussians are able to make individual opinions contrary to the opinions of their fellow bellarussians. I can't wait to visit

Good for Belarus! They should reject western liberalism in all its forms; they don't have to actively persecute gays, but it shouldn't be encouraged nor publicly accepted.
