Let's first start at the beginning in Alton. Right where the road begins is the recently placed monument of the famous Lincoln Douglas debate. If you would like to eat before your trip, there are many restaurants within walking distance of the visitors center. Alton is known for it's many nice eating establishments.

You begin your trip up the River Road going by many tug boats, that are moving up and down the Mississippi River. You will see some in dry dock.

As you travel up the river, you will pass through Piasa Harbor. It is a boat marina rest area. Between Alton and Piasa Harbor, is a picture of the famous Piasa Bird. It is located along the bluffs, of the river, on your side.

You will then pass through the small villages of Chautauqua and Elsah. Elsah has a Bed and Breakfast and a couple of eating establishments.

Before you reach Grafton, you will pass the Raging Rivers Water Park. It is only open in the Summer.

The Grafton area has hotels, restaurants, ferries, antique stores, and craft centers. It is located where the Illinois river joins the Mississippi. The ferry north of Grafton is free. The one in grafton has a charge. Both are great trips to view the river.

Spring and Fall are the best times to travel the River Road. The Fall is especially scenic. However, there are tours in the Winter season as well. The American Eagle comes to this area in the cold of winter. People come from all over the United States to get a glimpse of this National treasure.
