Grenada Island in a Day

Islands in a Day Series

6
Grenada is a group of three islands (Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique) in the West Indies area of the Caribbean. Grenada lies northeast of Trinidad and Tobago and southwest of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Grenada is known as the "Spice Isle" because the islands produce cinnamon, cloves, cocoa, ginger, mace, nutmeg and tonka beans. Away from the beauty of the waterfront, there are plentiful palms, oleander, bougainvillea, bananas and fern trees. The three main islands are:

Grenada - largest island of the group where the largest population exists and home to St. George's, the nation's capital.

Carriacou - second largest island and home to the town of Hillsborough

Petit Martinique - smallest of the three islands with near nonexistent tourist facilities

Reaching the Islands

If you are arriving by plane, schedule a flight to Point Salines International Airport (GND), about four miles from St. George's. Connections can be made in Barbados and Trinidad.

Many cruise ships dock in the harbor at St. George's between October and May. Fun fact: the central post office is a short walk from the cruise dock...mailing letters back home with Grenadian stamps is memorable.

Transportation on Island

In towns, walking is a safe bet. Pedestrians do need to be vigilant for drivers around the narrow streets because there are no sidewalks and locals have interesting driving habits.

Taxis and minibuses are the prime means of transport around Grenada. I went on a minibus tour of the island in 2005 and can fully recommend this selection.

Car rentals are available. You have to remember that traffic travels on the left side of the street in Grenada. Keep your hand on the horn because there are many blind corners around the mountains above St. George's.

For inter-island transportation, look at Osprey Lines Limited. This ferry service is excellent to travel amongst the three islands of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Water taxis are also excellent and double as a water excursion.
