Termites are pesky insects that have to the ability to destroy an entire home or a field of crops. They live wherever they can find favorable conditions. This article will tell you exactly what termites need to survive and also how you can prevent them from invading your home.

Termites need only three things to survive. One of them is water. Most living creatures on this planet need water to survive and termites are no exception. They can find water in a variety of ways. Natural precipitation like rain is their main source of water. They can also find water from leaky faucets and standing pools of water outside the home.

Another thing that termites need to survive is soil. Most termites are subterranean creatures, meaning that they build their colonies in the ground. They build an elaborate system of tunnels that can extend three feet below the ground. They often use these tunnels to infiltrate your home.

The last thing that termites need to survive is a food source. Although they eat other things, wood is their preferred source of food. They are attracted to wood because of the fact that it contains a lot of cellulose. Some of the other things that termites eat are dung, humus, and vegetation.

There are a number of ways that you can help prevent termites from invading your home. Here are a few:

1. Get periodic inspections of your home. You should have a professional exterminator check your home for termites at least once a year. This will minimize the amount of damage that they cause if they do invade your house.

2. Seal holes in your foundation. Although termites can use their tunnels to infiltrate your home, if their is a crack in the foundation, you are giving them much easier access.

3. Fix any leaky faucets and other water leaks around your home. Failing to do so will give termites an excellent source of water.

4. Store any excess wood away from your home. If you use firewood, you may be tempted to store it closer to your house for easier access. This is the perfect meal for termites. After they are finished with that, they may decide to start in on your house.
