August 29, 2004 turned out to be one of the worst nights of my life. For the past two weeks I had dreaded going to my job, but had no real reason to quit my job as a night auditor. After all, the money was decent, the hours were okay, and I only had to work 3 days a week. None of that changed the
way I felt though. Regardless, I went to work at 10 p.m., as usual, and began what I thought would be an average night.

The night started out pretty decent. There was a nice group of people having a pizza party in the lobby and they even gave me some pizza before turning in for the night. At 12 a.m. my work was mostly done for the night, I only had two late check-ins and then all I would need to do would be to setup breakfast at 6 a.m. For anyone who isn't familiar with the job description of a night auditor, a night auditor is basically there to run the reports at the end of the night and answer any calls for pillows, extra blankets, etc. So basically the night auditor's job is a piece of cake.

I've been robbed at gunpoint once, mugged outside by a crazy man, and had guns pulled on me at various other times by idiots I used to associate with. The difference -- I was always in a place where I could run away. You were trapped behind a desk. Your boss was an ass, and business as a whole should stop thinking about the money and start thinking more about leaving ways for people to get out and away in case of danger. Stay strong!

Someone tried to carjack my husband outside of his work one night and cut him with a knife. He was so freaked out. It was very scary. He still works there after that. I don't know how he does it.

I'm so sorry, including that your former boss was so insensitive. This is one thing thats difficult to imagine unless you lived it.

Good article, Amy. I hope writing about it helps ease the trauma.

Robbery is a big deal, and it does seem that the owner lacked compassion for you. I agree that you are experiencing PTSD symptoms, which is quite normal. Thank you for sharing your story even though it was hard to do.

Amy, You're very brave to experience this again through your writing. It's good that you know that it wasn't your fault. What you experienced was horrible and I hope writing this helped you further to overcome your PTSD. Great article.
