You hear of many a celebrity donating money for this cause or that cause. From signing checks and donating album proceeds to an occasional event to raise awareness. Yesterday, Green Day frontman with family in tow began volunteer work in New Orleans with Habitat for Humanity rebuilding homes. Armstrong, wife, and kids all chipped in to help with the Operation Home Delivery department of Habitat for Humanity. The Operation Home Delivery department is known as their hurricane response unit. Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976 by Milliard and Linda Fuller and to date have rehabilitated more than 200,000 homes to date. Habitat for Humanity is estimating to have 1000 homes either completed or under construction by this summer in New Orleans. Volunteers logged a total of 10,500 labor hours in St. Tammany just outside on New Orleans in 2006 alone.
In addition to Armstrong's recent volunteer work, Green Day also collaborated with fellow band U2 on "The Saints Are Rising". The Saints Are Rising proceeds went directly to Music Rising- an organization that helped in replacing musical equipment lost in Hurricane Katrina.
Daily updates with photos will be available to track the progress of the Armstrong family efforts on www.greenday.net. It is unknown if the family will be contributing after the home they are working on at present is completed or not.
While Habitat for Humanity is welcome to financial donations, volunteers for labor are also encouraged. To help Habitat for Humanity- www.habitat.org
