A kidney stone is a solid concentration of dissolved minerals in the urine. The size of a kidney stone can vary from any where between the size of a grain of sand to the size of a pearl. Typically a kidney stone will leave the body by passing through the urine stream, but some may grow too large to
pass and cause obstruction. The kidney stone may block the flow of urine and cause a large amount of pain and discomfort. Signs that you may have a kidney stone include extreme pain in your side or back that does not go away, blood in urine, vomiting, burning during urination, cloudy or foul smelling urine, fever, and chills. You may experience one or several of these symptoms. You should see your doctor as soon as possible if you have any of the listed symptoms. There are four major types of kidney stones, they include calcium, struvite, uric acid, and cystine.
A calcium stone is formed of extra calcium and forms with other waste products to produce the stone.
A struvite stone may occur after having an infection of the urinary system. These stones contain magnesium and the waste product ammonia.
A uric acid stone is formed when there is too much acid in your urine. If you have problems with uric stones you may need to reduce the amount of meat that you consume.
A cystine stones are less common than the other types. Cysitne as an amino acid found in many proteins especially keratin. Cystine is a building block in that is included in the make up of your muscles, nerves, and other parts of the body. Cystine may build up in your urine and form a stone. The disease which causes cystine stones is usually hereditary and runs in your family.
There are steps you can take to prevent kidney stones and to prevent reoccurring kidney stones these steps include:
1. Drink large amounts of water. Drinking lots of water will help dilute the mineral or stone forming salts in the urine. Experts advise those who are prone to kidney stones drink 12 eight ounce glasses of water daily. Stones are not able to form in urine that is diluted.
