War of the Dolls: Should Barbie Be Slammed by the Bratz?

An Observation of Competition Between the World's Most Popular Dolls

There have been reports that Barbie's sales dropped when Bratz dolls were introduced. Apparently, the Bratz dolls are more modern and hip than Barbie. A decrease in Barbie doll sales is not a surprise due to the freshness of Bratz dolls. However, it is tough to say that Barbie dolls are no longer modern. Mattel frequently releases new Barbie dolls that reflect current trends in sports, society and entertainment.

This does not seem to make a difference when it comes to popularity. Mattel's declining sales for the Barbie doll influenced their decision to make a more stylish Barbie doll to compete with Bratz. As a result, MyScene Barbie was introduced. The MyScene dolls look similar to Bratz but carry the Barbie name. While Bratz dolls are very stylish and modern, there is no reason that Mattel should adjust their most popular toy to compete with an inferior doll.

Bratz dolls lack staying power and will always remain as a party doll among young girls. Over the years, Barbie dolls have represented successful women and mothers. Bratz on the other hand depict nothing more than fashion and fame. In many ways, Barbie dolls are classier than Bratz dolls. This is one thing that gives Mattel an advantage over Bratz dolls and is a good reason why Barbie sales should not drop too low.

Unfortunately, businesses care only about money which drives their decision making about all products. However, the Barbie doll will always have a great legacy no matter how much money Bratz generate. Barbie has a long history in the toy market. Barbie dolls have been a popular item among young girls for decades. It is a shame to see a new doll have such a significant impact on the popularity sales of Barbie dolls.

Barbie represents American culture in various ways. The doll has been an astronaut, basketball player and many celebrities. Bratz depict one area of society, which is a life full of parties and fashion. This is not something that young girls should be exposed to on a constant basis. There should be a healthy balance between hard work, success and parties.
