Don Imus and the Black Self-Image

When Don Imus decided to call the Rutgers ladies basketball team 'nappy-headed 'hos', and made reference to jiggaboos and wannabees, he had people calling for his head. How dare he say that about anyone. I was shocked. Is free speech really about being offensive? I always thought it was about someth
ing more. Although the end result was that his simulcast on MSNBC was cancelled, and he was consequently fired, we have to wonder as a black race whether we are unwittingly encouraging others to disrespect us as much as we seem to disrespect ourselves. I apparently am not the only one that thinks this is the case. Listening to Michael Baisden on his syndicated Bad Boy show, I heard Iyanla Vanzant make a statement about how difficult it is for others to respect us when we don't respect ourselves. She noted that there are many rappers that repeatedly call women 'hos' and B***Hs and often times there will be women gyrating to that drivel in the clubs (Giiirrrlll....that's my SONG!!!). What is happening to us?

This is interesting because Nas has an album called N*, and Jay-Z and LL Cool J are defending him, stating that he will have something positive and interesting to say on the subject. I guess if a bourgeois African-American wants to use that vernacular it is acceptable but if someone who is selling drugs in the neighborhood wants to use it there is an issue. Wake up people; we can't take that name back any more than women can own being called out of their name and disrespected in that way. Such double standards, and no, Whites will never let go of that because we haven't let go of it, and we're crazy to think that they would simply because of the way that it makes us feel when they say it. I mean what do you think is thought and said about you when you're not around, in private, has anyone learned anything from Dog the Bounty Hunter?
