For practically as long as there have been cars, there have been speeding limits. For as long as there have been speed limits, there have been drivers who abuse them. Additionally, there have been drivers who will try anything to avoid getting caught.

The easiest way to prevent a speeding ticket is to not speed. It is important to realize this because it gives you some insight as to why, on that lonely stretch of highway where you can see for miles, you still have to adhere to a speed limit. It is primarily a way for local and state governments to make money. This is why almost no one follows the 55 MPH limits any longer and most state police will give drivers 5 - 10 MPH over the speed limit (although do not bank on that at all, as it depends on the officer).

Realizing why there are speed limits will let you form a strategy to avoid getting caught. By understanding that stealth mode is the only way anyone would ever get a ticket, you can prettily easily identify and avoid speed traps. Additionally, by understanding and being aware of your surroundings, you increase the likelihood that you will see a trap before you get caught.

Some drivers have opted for radar detectors, but the driver should be very careful using this strategy. For one, having a radar detector is illegal in most places. For another, new radar technology is rendering radar detectors obsolete almost as soon as the detector is sold to the public.

The best advice is to figure out where the police officer will sit in wait. Look for stretches of road that have long hills and anticipate that the bottom of the hill is a likely area. Also, look for sudden dips that will rapidly elevate speed, since at the bottom of these are great areas for traps, as well. Do not exceed the speed limit greatly as it increases the chances of getting a ticket if you get caught.

Watch the traffic in front of you. If suddenly you see everyone breaking, chances are there was or is a reason. Often, that reason is a parked police cruiser. When you do drive through a trap, memorize where it is located. Officers will use the same places based on success over and over and usually only change when the trap stops working.
