Healthy Trick or Treat Snack Ideas
Healthy Treats for Halloween
Halloween is a fun holiday that allows kids to dress up and collect treats. This usually means loads of sugar. However, not all treats are bad. There are some tasty treats you can serve your trick-or-treaters that are healthy. From individual snacks to creative home-made delights, here are some yummy healthy treats that you can hand out.'Handy' Popcorn Treats
These are fun 'handy' treats to serve your little ghouls and goblins. You will need:
Clear plastic kitchen gloves
Candy corn
Light, unbuttered or unsalted popcorn
Black and orange twist ties
First, place one piece of candy corn in each finger of a plastic glove. Fill entire glove with popped pop corn, then tie the glove at the wrist with a twist tie. This makes an easy and healthy snack that your trick or treaters are sure to enjoy.
Pumpkin Rice Crispy Treats
These make great festive Halloween treats. You will need:
3 Tbsp light butter or margarine
1 bag of mini marshmallows
6 cups of puffed rice cereal
A small bag of pretzel sticks
Orange food coloring (or red and yellow food coloring to make orange)
Combine butter and marshmallows in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on high for two minutes, stir, then microwave an additional minute. Add a couple of drops of food coloring ( if you are using red and yellow- 3 drops of yellow and 1 drop of red to make orange) and stir until color is evenly distributed and mixture is smooth. Add your cereal and stir until well coated. Scoop out a portion of the mix using a buttered spoon or spatula and form into a small round ball to form your pumpkin. Break a pretzel stick in half and insert one end into the top of the pumpkin to create the stem. Wrap with plastic wrap and tie with a twist tie or ribbon to give out to trick or treaters.
Individual snack packs
If you are looking for a simple treat that you don't have to prepare, you can hand out individual packs of healthy treats. Favored snacks among kids that are ideal are: goldfish crackers, teddy grahams, peanut butter crackers (such as Ritz bits), boxes of raisins, and pretzels. You may even be able to find some of these snacks in shapes of Halloween creatures during October.
