The term "dry mouth" pretty much says it all. Except to say, when you suffer from this problem, your mouth can feel as dry as sand. Dry mouth can make it difficult to swallow, and eat some foods, as well. If you suffer from this problem, then try these homemade remedies for getting rid of dry mouth.

Having a dry mouth is an "off-and-on" condition for some people, but a permanent problem for others. It can be caused by a natural lack of saliva. It can also be caused by illnesses like Diabetes, taking prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, smoking, stress and nervousness.

In order to make sure your body is properly hydrated, the experts recommend that you drink six to eight glasses of water each day. This is especially important for people who suffer from dry mouth. If you can't keep a bottle of water with you all the time, you can suck on mints or hard candies to help produce much needed saliva. Chewing a piece of gum can also help moisten your mouth. Sugar-free candies and gum are the best choices for chronic dry mouth sufferers. Since their mouths produce less saliva than normal, there's not a lot of moisture to clean the sugar off their teeth and wash it away.

Another homemade remedy to get rid of dry mouth is to brush your teeth and tongue after every time you eat a meal or snack. Mint or Cinnamon-flavored toothpaste- with fluoride added- is the best because both tastes will help encourage your mouth to produce saliva. Brushing your teeth often will also remove food particles and plaque from your teeth and tongue to help avoid tooth decay.

If you can't brush your teeth in between meals, then rinse your mouth well with a fluoride mouthwash. The mouthwash will also stimulate your saliva glands and help rid your mouth of food particles.

To help get rid of dry mouth, you should also avoid drinking caffeinated beverages and alcohol. Caffeine and alcohol actually dehydrate your body because both types of beverages make you urinate more. The result? A dry mouth.
