Kurt Vonnegut (1922-2007) was one of America's greatest writers. His science fiction novels and short stories were politically irrelevant. His novels warned us about our future with black comedy and satire. He was also a humanist and the president of the American Humanist Association. Kurt Vonnegut died Wednesday April 11. My favorite is his novel Galapagos and SlaughterHouse-Five. I've accumulated his best and most famous quotes to remember him by. He will be missed. Hope you enjoy them.

I don't remember where I read it, perhaps in one of his novels, but someone was complaining about how messy his office was, and he said in response something like, "If you think this office is messy, you should see it in here," while tapping his forehead. Does anyone remember that from anywhere? He might've been describing his brother, now that I think about it. Also, I remember in the beginning of Slapstick, he said the world needs less love and more common decency, and that we all should do more rolling around on the floor with dogs. I agree.

"What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured." That is my favorite quote from the list. Good job.

I want to stay as close to the edge as I can without going over. Out on the edge you see all kinds of things you can't see from the center. Kurt Vonnegut

You forgot one! Those are great, but my all-time favorite is: "Vietnam was an exercise in mistaken idealism; Iraq in cynical money-making. And there's no optimism or idealism now -- Americans are tired of knowledge. Our leaders, the C-students from Yale, know this. We're proud of being ignorant; that leaves virtue at our core. We aren't frazzled by knowledge like foreigners, so we can be trusted."

This is my personal favorite: In his scathing 1965 essay "Science Fiction," he states: "I learned," in 1952 from the reviewers of Player Piano , "that I was a science fiction writer [...]. I have been a soreheaded occupant of the file drawer labeled science fiction ever since, and I would like out, particularly since so many serious critics regularly mistake the drawer for a urinal" From: Simpson, Josh. ""This Promising of Great Secrets": Literature, Ideas, and the (Re)Invention of Reality in Kurt Vonnegut's God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, Slaughterhouse-Five, and Breakfast of Champions Or "Fantasies of an Impossibly Hospitable World": Science Fiction and M." Critique 45.3 (2004): 261-271.
