Homemade Parrot Toys

Low-Cost Alternatives to Store-Bought Items

Parrots love playing with colorful rings, bells, and other toys, but store-bought toys for birds can be quite expensive, especially those sold in pet stores. Instead of buying toys designed especially for birds, why not look for lower cost alternatives?
Homemade toys for pet parrots are just as entertaining as store-bought toys, and they're definitely much cheaper. Consider making the following homemade toys and items of entertainment for your pet parrot. These toys are inexpensive, educational, very easy to make, and they'll keep your pet bird happily entertained. He certainly won't squawk because his toys are homemade!

Precautionary Statement

Parrots are naturally curious creatures, and they can be destructive. Frequently inspect all toys for loose parts, and dispose of any that are excessively worn or damaged. Supervise your parrot to ensure his safety when playing with homemade toys or any other playthings with parts that could come off and pose a choking hazard.

Homemade Activity Mat

If your pet parrot loves playing with the buttons on your clothing, he'll love this homemade activity mat. Securely sew buttons of various sizes on a washable cloth placemat or hand towel. Choose colorful plastic buttons, shiny metal buttons, and add several large beads of various shapes for added interest. Throw the activity mat over your shoulder to keep your pet parrot from pulling on the buttons of your clothing, or place it in his play area. Wash it as necessary according to label instructions.

Baby Rings & Things

Plastic key rings and similar toys designed for babies are great for pet parrots. Since they're safe for babies, they're safe for parrots, and they're considerably cheaper than parrot toys sold in pet shops. You can typically find plastic key rings, colorful links, and other baby toys for less than $3.00 each, and you can obtain them for even less if you shop yard sales and thrift stores.

Be careful using anything metal (buttons) with parrots. Make sure it is non-toxic. Parrots can be susceptible to metal toxicity.
