According to a recent survey, more than half of mothers aren't getting enough sleep. Are you one of them?

Getting enough sleep is important, because you need rest to be a good parent. Sleepless moms reported most often staying up thinking about tomorrow's to-do list, worrying over family issues, and stressing over the family's finances.

As you might expect, full-time outside-the-house-job working moms were among the worst affected. They reported suffering from lack of sleep fifty-nine percent of the time; compare that to forty-eight percent of stay-at-home moms.

And those sleepy moms aren't getting the help they need. While a full fifty percent of working moms admitted to getting six or fewer hours of sleep each night, four out of five of them haven't talked to their doctors or considered using a prescription sleep medications.

But some cite good reason for avoiding sleep medications. Almost thirty percent reported that they feared they could become addicted to such medicine, and stated a concern that they wouldn't be alert enough to respond if their children needed them during the night.

While these concerns are certainly valid, they leave many moms in a constant state of sleepiness. That state cause trigger additional problems, such as depression and arthritis, which are already more common in women that in men.

So what can a sleepy mom do to improve her sleep-quality? Here are some tips:

* Keep your bedtime and wake time the same seven days a week.

* Make your sleeping area for sleep only. Don't read, watch television, sort laundry, etc. on the bed.

* Make your your brain recognize that this is the 'sleeping spot'.

* Avoid consuming alcohol and/or caffeine after 3pm.

* Develop a bedtime 'wind down' routine, to trigger your body that it's time to rest. Just like the bath-story-feeding-lights out routine you did when your kids were little, your grown-up body can be trained the same way.

* Make your sleeping area dark, cool, and quiet. Remove all the distractions you possibly can, so that there isn't anything external to grab your mind's attention just as you're drifting off.

I will be so glad when my twins can sleep through the night. They seem to be tag team partners. When I get one settled, the other one seems to wake-up. It's a never ending cycle. Great article.

I'm a sleepy mom, and I thought all that would end when my kids got older, their 9 and 12 and I still never get enough sleep....

I know how to get sleep... I know all about the set bedtimes, no caffeine in the afternoon, no TV in bed, all that jazz. But when your sleep problems stem from a baby daughter who wakes up every 2 hours around the clock, those things don't help a whole heck of a lot. :-P

hahahah... no caffeine after 3pm. Sound advice... I guess sleep deprivation is one of those circular things. Have to drink the expresso to stay awake, so it keeps me awake, so I'm exhausted the next day, drinking expresso to stay awake. Yep... caffeine addict. Sue Francis... when mine were that age, I used to sit in the dark corner of my living room while they were up, giggling madly over the thought of duct tape (for the record, I never did it - it just seemed funny when they were merry at 4am when they didn't go to sleep until two...)

I get a bit of flack from my wife at times because of my ability to go to bed and fall asleep no matter what she's doing, watching, or whether the lights are on. She unfortunately usually has a hard time falling asleep.

I"m definitely a sleepy mom and I need to haul my butt down to the doc's office. I talked to her about it once but never followed up. I really could use a good night's sleep. It's only 8:45 here and I'm already yawning!

I can be considered a sleepy mom. I have 5 kids and the fact that I stay at home with them all day (3 are not in school yet) gives me pretty much no time to do any of my work on the computer. So I usually have to wait until 9:30, 10pm at night to get started on my articles, my email, writing for a few other sites I'm a member of and visiting the survey sites that I'm also a member of. I usually don't get to bed until around 1am, and my 2 month old usually wakes me up a few times during the night. Then I'm up by 7:30 to get my son on the bus, and by then the rest of the kids are up. So yes, I am definitely a sleepy mom.

I'm, obviously, not a sleepy mom, but I've dated a few girls who would fall into this catagory. Their biggest problem was staying on the same sleep schedule, I think, but it's got to be so tough.
