Feeder mice are in great demand for reptile food. Many pet stores do not raise their own broods of white feeder mice for a variety of reasons. Reasons include the lack of space, the time it takes to keep breeding records, and the lack of desire. This is where the home based mouse breeder comes into play.
As a home-based mouse breeder you can make a few hundred dollars per month with a minimal investment. There are a few things to consider.

First, If you are going to be successful, you need to be willing to get organized. You must be able to keep simple records of birth dates and feeding times for your mice. Without being organized, it will be difficult to project the availability of your mice ans you also may forget to feed them the recommended amount of times per day.

Also you need to have maybe three to five-hundred dollars to invest in enough supplies and containers to set up your new business. Once you decide on how large you want your business to be you can purchase your animals and supplies.

The best way to get started on a small budget is to use sterilite containers from any discount store. These are available from around six to seven dollars each and are much cheaper than cages. Since mice are escape artists you should get the deepest containers you can find. Most breeders usually use the twenty quart containers but you may choose a larger one if you wish. It depends on how much room you have and how often you want to clean them. Of course the smaller the container is, the more often it will need to be cleaned. Store the lids somewhere safe, as you will not need them. Leave the lids off for better ventilation.

Never use bowls for the water in your mouse homes. The mice will throw everything into the bowl and foul the water, making it a constant chore to replace it. You should buy the water bottles made just for small rodents available in the pet stores or online. Water bottles are one of the biggest expenses but they are well worth it for convenience.

I'm very interested in starting a feeder mice and rat business. Are there any good publications on the market that would be beneficial in guiding someone in this venture?

I raise feeder mice and rats for a living. Last year i sold about$300,000.00 worth of feeders. Dog food will work ,but do not sugest it.If you do use it ,get the cheapest you can find.because it will be plant based protien ,not meat based. Yes rodent food is very costly unless you buy it in bulk. Hog pellets work much better. If you have any other questions you may call me 757-696-0801

in all my mice experience small groups of mice love each other and pitch in with taking care of the babies, not kill them (in regards to the above commet). If you are raising for pinkies it dosen't matter anyways because you take and kill the babies... fact of life.

1: doh food is way to high in protien and fat to be feed to bredding condition mice 2: you can't keep all of the 6 mice together, the male or other female could kill the babies
