There are many types of seed exchanges on the Internet. Many of them are simple message boards that registered users can place requests on. This type of seed exchange requires that users are members in order to post. Most of the time, membership is free. Before posting an ad, make sure that you read the rules of the exchange. If you don't follow the rules, it isn't likely that people will want to trade with you.
Another type of seed exchange actually charge for the seeds. You must become a member and pay for each packet of seeds that you order. Usually this type of site is set up as a non-profit organization, and the prices are low. You can get much better deals than from a regular seed store. The good thing about the non-profit seed exchanges is that you don't have to find someone to trade with in order to get seeds. The company takes care of finding the different types of seeds and has them readily available with no waiting!
There are also seed exchanges that just specialize in plant cuttings or bulbs. These are great for a faster start for your gardening needs. No need to wait weeks for the seeds to grow up into little plants. The cuttings available at this type of exchange are often ready to plant into the soil of your garden or greenhouse.
A great thing about see exchanges is that so many types of seeds and plants are available. Many of the seeds are of the heirloom variety. These are often so rare that they can only be obtained from the actual grower. Seed shops just don't carry these odd and rare varieties. One example is the Cherokee Purple tomato. It is a very large tomato with a dark purple color that allegedly has its origins with the Cherokee tribe of native Americans. This tomato plant is very popular among gardening enthusiasts and is very hard to find commercially.
