Texas Wines: A Guide to Five Unique Wines and Wineries

Five Wonderful Texas Wines

When most people think of Texas, they think of oil fields and cattle strewn about the countryside. Although not hidden, the Texas hill country is home to dozens of wineries producing hundreds of thousands of gallons of fine wines for the connoisseur.

The 2009 season is not over yet, so most of the wines haven't been released yet. Drought, floods, and Pierce's Disease have caused considerably lower yields. Pierce's Disease is a caused by bacteria that forms a gel in the vine preventing the leaves and grape from getting water, like a plaque-filled artery. There is no cure so far.

But Texas wineries are far from finished. Varieties of grapes are being grown that show resistance to the bacteria and infected plants are identified and destroyed immediately.

Here is a list of five wonderful Texas wines:

2007 Spicewood Sweet Bluebonnet Flush

Spicewood vineyard is located off County Road 409 not far from Spicewood, Texas. It is convenient to both Austin and San Antonio travelers. Founded in 1992 and family owned, they have rapidly made a name for themselves with many unique wines.

The Sweet Bluebonnet Flush is a mix of Merlot (89%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (11%). It retails for only $9.99, definitely affordable for any gathering. A delightful light red and clear in color, its taste sets it apart from anything else.

The aroma alone is worth the purchase: apricots, white pepper, papaya and strawberries, while the taste is definitely a light fruity mix of apricot and strawberry. Light bodied and not overly sweet, this could become your favorite dessert wine of all time.

2008 Fall Creek Chenin Blanc

Located in Tow, Texas off County Road 222, the Fall Creek Vineyards are a treat for any visitor. Established in 1975 approximately 80 miles northwest of Austin, the sandy loam is perfect for growing premium wine grapes. They offer mail order services for their wines, something a lot of wineries do not.
