Avoiding the GameStop Rip Off: Don't Trade in Games at GameStop

Imagine this scenario: You've been a PlayStation 2 owner since day one and you've decided that with the next generation here that you'll trade in some games you aren't attached to and earn some extra cash for games. Luckily for you, a
GameStop is nearby so you scoop up the games and head on over to see how much you'll make on them. Some are older than others, but the most you get for a game is around $20. After this, you probably have enough to pay for a quarter of a new system so you put that to your funds and go on about your business. A week later you come back and see that the games you traded in for pennies have been turned around and sold for more than double, sometimes four times as much as you traded them in for. To put it simply, GameStop got away with highway robbery and there's not a thing you can do about it.

If I've seen it once I've seen it a hundred times: inexperienced consumers trading away their libraries for a fraction of what they spent to amass it just so GameStop can turn around and make a huge profit on them. While I've managed to talk a few out of doing it, still many more keep trading in with GameStop and they continue to grow.

If you're thinking of trading your games in at GameStop, say this in your head ten times over: GameStop is a rip off.

While I originally purchased Valkyrie Profile 2 at its full $49.99 price, if I were to return to trade in the game (which still retails for that price) I'd likely only receive around $20, whereas GameStop would turn around and put the game on the shelf for $50. This ends up being the case for almost every single game that they sell used. Another annoying factor is that if you request cash for the trade-in, you are instantly given less (20%) because you're moving the money out of the store.

The best thing for anyone looking to trade-in games is to avoid GameStop like the plague. In fact, if you're having trouble finding a place to trade in your game then here are few suggestions for you to take the games off of your hands.

It's kind of funny, really. How are you ripped off if you know exactly what you're getting and agree to it? Gamestop is upfront about what they'll give you for a title and you either agree or you don't. That's called free-market capitalism and it's a wonderful thing. And while yes, one could, for example, sell used titles on eBay, you'd have to pay a listing fee... and a final value fee... and a paypal fee... and you have to put in the effort of listing it... waiting for an auction to end... in the end, how much more money are you getting once you factor in all these fees and the time you spent on it. This "article" is ridiculous. This author is ridiculous. (For the record, I have absolutely no interest, financial or otherwise, in Gamestop)

WTF! is that , i bought it for 45$ cash but now i am going to get a 1/4 of that back, the rip off is that now they the same game i just gave them back on the shelf for the same 45 dollars, i h8 gamestop i will never go there for another video game ever again , i suggest that you check out game for sale online like craigslist . right now i just found my MK VS DC for 15 dollars as mush as gamestop gave me back for it

Ok the people saying they are trading in games like Metal Gear solid 4 and only getting $5 are lying big time. My friend traded in MGS 4 and got 35 for it the same day you did pissed gamer. So you are lying you little prick

Umm They would not buy a game and then sell it more used then the new price like you listed(Valkyrie Profile 2 for 49.99 and then they sell it used for 50.00. You really don't know what you are talking about. Also ofcopurse the older games are going to get you less then a newer game. It is common sense with games like sports titles or Guitar Hero and Rock Band that the older versions are going to drop in price hugely when the next version is out. But most of the time they will give you extra credit when you trade it in towards a copy of the newer version of the game. Plus they are not nearly as bad as Gamecrazy. Gamecrazy trade in prices are worse and there employees don't know jack shit about games.

I don't know what your talking about because I once got 30 store credits for a gamecube game. That was a while though. But still, it was more than like 5 bucks.

Gamestop is the DEVIL. THEY OFFERED ME 3 dollars and 50 cent for a unopened Guitar Hero II bundle (Guitar controller & GH II game)that cost me 96 dollars new from Wal-Mart. I had two so I didn't need another one so I decided to sell it. But NO WAY!!! I'll keep it and take shits on it before I sell it to those FAKE GAMERS for $3.50. They would have got it for $92.50 cheaper than what I paid and I guarantee they would put it back for sale for atleast $50 dollars. They would make 48 dollars and 50 cent profit off me!!! SCREW THEM AND ALL THE EX EMPLOYEES THAT DEFEND THEM. I don't blame the employees unless they think that it's right for Gamestop to do this. They have to pay what Gamestop says to pay for used games. But they don't have to become a GAMESTOP FANBOY. MESSAGE TO ALL GAMERS = GAMESTOP IS THE ENEMY. The company is ripping off the game industry by selling used games that the Developers of the game make nothing off of and they rip off their customers. Like I really want to buy a u
