Description:

The Afghan hound stands in the large breed of dog category. They are very tall and slender. Their face is covered with short fur, and their muzzle is very long and narrow. This breed of dog has very, and I do mean very, long fur. Their colors are: black, black and white, grey, grey and white, grey and black, black and grey, white, tan, cream, and so on.

Average life span:
The Afghan hound lives an average life of 14 years. This breed of dog sometimes lives to be about 20 years of age; rare, but, yes, it does happen.

Litter size:
The female Afghan hound can have a litter of up to 15 pups. They average 8 pups per litter. The mother will feed the pups, you don't have to worry about that, and then after about 8 weeks she will wean them and they'll move onto dry food.

Height:
The height of an Afghan hound is about the same for both genders. The female is either the same size as the male or just a little shorter. The male averages a maximum height of 27 to 29 inches tall (68 to 73 cm.)

Weight:

Both genders weigh in at the same ballpark. They average a weight of 58 to 64 pounds (26 to 34 kg.) Your Afghan hound should not be 10 pounds under 58 or 5 pounds over 64 pounds. Most people think this is stupid to mention, thinking it's not true, but it is very important to your dogs' health.

Temperament:
The Afghan hound is very sweet, loyal, affectionate, and intelligent. They are not known to attack a stranger on sight, but they do act very suspicious of them. This breed of dog looks for attention constantly. The Afghan hound does well with older - caring children. If you have kids and they like to pull on the dog a lot, or do other things that may tick it off, the Afghan hound will get testy. All in all, the Afghan hound does well with loving - responsible owners.

Health problems:
The Afghan hound doesn't have a reoccurring health problem in the breed. Some breeds of dog generally have a health issue that runs through the blood of that breed, but the Afghan seems to have healthy breeding blood. Afghan hounds have low pain tolerance. Even the most minor cut will cause them pain and agony. It is best to treat your dog with the utmost care in this kind of situation.
