The STD Gonorrhea is Making a Comeback and is Apparently Stronger Then Ever!

Add another name to the list of super-bugs in the world! Gonorrhea has made a significant comeback, the previously treatable STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) is now new and improved. The CDC (Center for Dise

ase Control) has recently announced that gonorrhea has recently evolved several new strains that are resistant to all but one kind of antibiotic. This is very alarming to members of the CDC because new methods of treating gonorrhea are currently not in development. The CDC also announced that they will no longer recommend the use of the type of antibiotics known as fluoroquinolones because of recent tests indicating that gonorrhea is becoming highly resistant to that form of antibiotic. Gonorrhea previously became resistant to penicillin and tetracycline and now has started to fight back against the fluoroquinolones.

Now it would appear the only thing standing between the human race and an epidemic of gonorrhea is the class of antibiotics known as cephalosporins. Currently there are no indications that gonorrhea has developed any type of resistance to cephalosporins however the fact that this is now the only drug that is capable of definitely treating the disease is a huge concern for the CDC. "While we have not seen any significant resistance to cephalosporins to date, any emerging resistance would be a significant public health concern. Clearly, there is an urgent need for new, effective medicines to treat gonorrhea as we are running out of options to treat this serious disease," Said Dr. John Douglas, director of the CDC's division of STD prevention. In light of the recent discovery of the drug resistant strains the CDC has recommended the use of an injectable drug known as ceftriaxone to treat: genital, anal and oral gonorrhea.
