Cinco de Mayo, May 5th, is a day of fiestas, feasting, drinking, parades, and carnivals. It is a day of celebration in both the United States and Mexico. It is the celebration of the Mexican Militias defeat of the French at the Battle of Puebla, 1862. Mexicans are quick to point out that Cinco de Mayo is not to be confused with Mexican Independence Day, September 16, 2007. The purpose of the celebration has been largely lost in the commercialization of the holiday. It doesn't seem to matter why we are celebrating, it is a day of partying and fun. It has become a day that both Americans and Hispanics enjoy.

Your menu on Cinco de Mayo may include some traditional Mexican dishes, or try a new dish with flair. Plan to enjoy fajitas, with steak or chicken. Enjoy corn chowder for starters. Cook steak or chicken with chipolte sauce for added spice. Don't forget the nachos, chips, and salsa. This is the perfect day to go for salsa al fresco. It is easy to throw together with fresh tomatoes, onions, a little garlic, cilantro, and salt. Top it with lime juice and you will have salsa that will set prep your taste buds for a great Mexican meal. Other good appetizers or main dishes include burritos, tacos, and enchiladas. You may also enjoy carne asada, which combines the best steaks with peppers, garlics, chili, and cumin among other spices. You can add some Mexican cornbread to your meal by simply adding whole kernel corn, chili, and jalapenos to your regular cornbread recipe.

Go all out and try your hand at cooking, or enjoy some authentic Mexican cuisine at a real Mexican restaurant. Variety is the spice of life, especially on Cinco de Mayo. Tex-Mex restaurants will likely offer plenty of parties and Cinco de Mayo specials, but the best food will be found in your authentic neighborhood restaurants. Guacamole, salsa, nachos, and tortillas are more likely to be fresh and homemade.
