Accounting for nonprofit organization is very different from that of companies, corporations or other for-profit entities. If you are a bookkeeper for a for-profit group and will transfer to a charitable institution, church or other nonprofit groups, you will need to review not only the financial statements of such organizations, but also the tax rules applicable to them. Nonprofit accounting is really a tedious work, particularly because the accounts used by such organizations are entirely different from the usual accounts that we normally use for companies and other profit-earning entities.
Below are some nonprofit accounting tips that can help make your accounting duties easier:
Be open to a change in perspective
If you want to be successful in accounting for nonprofit organization, you must be open to a drastic change in perspective. You are not looking into revenues and profit now, but donations. Instead of customers and clients, you are now faced with members, grant providers, and donors. Since not everyone is giving money, you need to think of how to account for services, time, expertise, and goods.
As an accountant for nonprofit groups, you are not only concerned with the finances or cash, but you also have the responsibility to keep track of the donations, services rendered and many other things related to nonprofit groups. Now, you are not only concerned with being accountable for every penny, but you must also ensure that every goods or supplies donated are well accounted for.
