How to Clean an ATV Four-Wheeler Air Filter

Routine Maintenance

Keeping the air filter of your ATV four-wheeler clean is of the utmost importance. A clean air filter will not only improve the power and performance of your ATV four-wheeler, but it will also extend the overall life of your ATV. Keeping the air filter clean is part of basic ATV
four-wheeler maintenance, and it should be as routine as checking the oil.

Location and Removal

The air filter of a high-performance ATV four-wheeler is usually located under the seat, and the latch is usually located in back. Simply pull up on the latch, and be prepared to thoroughly clean off any dust, dirt, and debris from the surrounding area as well as the plastic air filter cover.

The air filter cover is more than likely held in place by bolts. Remove the bolts, and once again, make sure the area is free of dust, dirt, and any debris. After removing the bolts, it might be necessary to use a flathead screwdriver to break the seal of the cover in order to remove it. Use care when separating the cover from the casing so you don't damage either piece in the process.

Once the cover has been removed, you will notice a small gasket. This gasket seals the cover, and extreme care should be taken to avoid damaging it. If the gasket is in bad condition, or if it becomes damaged during removal, it will require replacement. A new gasket is usually only about five or six dollars if it needs to be replaced, and when in doubt, replacing it is well worth the time and expense. The life of your ATV four-wheeler engine greatly depends upon the quality and condition of the air filter that protects it.

The next step is to locate the screw in the center of the air filter. Carefully remove the screw, and gently pull it out. You'll notice a plastic support inside the air filter. Carefully separate the support from the air filter, and gently remove it to avoid ripping the material.

i agree with freddy, this is a totally lame explanation. it tells you how to take it out and puit it in. it also says to use hand soap, which don't work at all, especially if you use REAL foam filter oil. Hand soap will never break it down, it just clumps. I found SIMPLE GREEN work great for me. And then, they don't even mention the most IMPORTANT part, RE-OILING the filter, which traps the dirt. What a stupid article.

Use dish washing liquid to clean it, and then let it dry very well. Then it must be oiled good. The oil is what traps the dirt/dust particles in the filter to keep them out of the motor.

Once you have the filter out, cloean it in petrol and allow to air dry, then vigourasly rub air filter oil into the filter, squeeze out excess oil, wait 10 to 15 minutes, and replace!
