While the debate about immigration rages on, illegal immigrants are doing something that ties them to almost every American: filing tax returns. Although not every illegal immigrant pays taxes, more and more are making use of an Individual Tax Identification Number provided by the IRS to file on April 17th.

The Individual Tax Identification Number was created by the IRS as a way of getting money from foreigner investors generating income in the United States. Although there are many foreign investors that regularly use this number to report income, sources say illegal immigrants are the largest group using this number.

Filing a tax return and having an Individual Tax Identification Number is a way of creating a financial history that allows for loans to purchase a house or even a car, allowing for a better quality of life. And by filing tax returns, illegals are able to create one more item that might help their application for citizenship.

Although many people may think that filing an IRS return as an immigrant may be a way to get deported, experts say that immigration and tax departments rarely share information with each other. However, filing a tax return opens immigrants to the possibility of an IRS audit. Being flagged by an audit could cause them to attract the attention of immigration officials, something that many are eager to avoid.

Critics are concerned that these numbers provide illegal immigrants with one more way of intertwining themselves into a country that they entered by breaking the law. They propose that the IRS works with other government agencies to prevent any person illegally in the country from establishing more ties in the United States.

Supporters claim that critics of the practice oppose it because it counters the image of illegal immigrants as remorseless law breakers. They also point out that illegal immigrants pay more in taxes than citizens because they often do not qualify for certain deductions.

I cannot believe that we have so many ignorant people living among us in the "Good Ole' U.S.A" They aren't living off of the unemployment system when they don't want to work, they are the ones who are doing the work that the precious "citizens" refuse to do. Money that goes unclaimed THAT COMES OUT OF THEIR CHECKS are paying for our dear wars, the welfare checks of the AMERICAN CITIZENS that are continually having children. It is easy to blame an entire race for the mistakes of Americans who are too lazy and spoiled. These immigrants you speak of are the hardest working breed of man we have and will ever see.

Why are people defending criminals? If a large enough group of rapist start protesting is our government going to look the other way when they rape? Its all about big business...

Vito's comment about illegals receiving Earned Income Tax Credits is wrong. People with ITINs CANNOT get Earned Income Credit. Also, people with Social Security cards who have been classified as "illegal to work" also cannot get Earned Income Credit. As someone who prepares tax returns, I can asure you, we DO ask people to report ALL income. I even explain what "all income" means & reiterate that those who fail to report all income - even tips - are breaking the law and if audited will be penalized. Two last points: Most people with ITINs also have W-2s. Most people who make me think they are likley lying are natural U.S. citizens. (We generally have less to fear & a lot more confidence that the IRS won't audit us).

As a person who is in the industry I can assure you that American citizens are the ones who try and cheat. The IRS auditors are not auditing illegal aliens rather the top 10% of our citizens who now think that its ok to not pay their share. Proof is in all of the court cases in tax court. Check the docket--you wont be seeing some poor fool making 8.75/hr. It will be someone from a "good" background and who makes enough to live their life and pay taxes.

These tax preparation firms are in it for the money. They entice illegal immigrants to file returns with an ITIN and charge them a fee. They tell the illegal immigrants that filing will help them become citizens. They don't have to ask if they are here illegally, the fact that they don't have a social security number says it all. These returns don't pay tax. Look at the tax tables, a family of 4 making the minimum wages (two wage earners) owes no federal income tax and when Congress gives them Amnesty, they will still pay no tax and they will get money from the IRS via the Earned Income Tax Credit, about $4500 for this family of four, check it out.

I doubt if they declare money earned "under the table". I also doubt if they were asked to disclose it by the people preparing their taxes. If I only had to declare what I wanted to declare, I'd have it made and my taxes would not be 30%. However, any taxes paid are better than no taxes paid. I know of no illegal immigrant families here in the US (and I know many of them) with less than 3 children. Most have at least 5. They worry about their money, but they keep on making babies. Let them go back to their home countries. The sooner, the better. They literally are a drain on the honest American people.
