Think you've got it figure out? Think again. Even for the seasoned traveler, little things you didn't think of are constantly revealed as you undertake each new journey. Here are a few to remember when backpacking the first-world countries:

1. Backpacks are overrated. Although the idea of strapping your world to your shoulders seems powerful and enticing, there are innumerable advantages to having wheels. When dealing with ticket lines and beaurocracy, taking off and putting on a 70-pound bag can be a lot more difficult than setting down a handle.

2. Don't believe everything you see. This applies especially to the cost of living - just because three restaurants in a row are charging 13? for a smoothie doesn't mean you won't find a café around the bend charging half that, or be able to purchase fresh fruit for only a couple of dollars.

3. Get off the beaten path. This is essential to resourceful touring - seeing what everyone else is seeing (at the price everyone else is paying) can not only be overrated, it can actually distract from the hidden treasures a place has to offer.

4. Don't do your homework...at least, not too far ahead. Trying to hard to figure out in advance what your schedule can be and what you should see can be overwhelming, not to mention actually misleading; the most up-to-date information should usually be obtained at the station the day before departure.

5. Don't be yourself. Well...you should always be yourself, but be careful to act confident, even if you have to fake it. Being conspicuously lost, vulnerable, or indecisive will make you an instant target for pickpockets, petty thieves, and seedy guys (especially seedy guys).

6. Don't drink the water. Actually, you really shouldn't be drinking the USA water, either, but that's another story. Even in first-world countries, most locals buy their water bottled or install filters.

These are some good tips to keep in mind. I agree that backpacks are overrated. No matter how much you think you need, cut it in half: find a little laundromat somewhere and wash your stuff every other day, but it's torture carrying a huge backpack on a hot day.
