It is almost assumed today that once you graduate from high school that your next step will be to enter college and leave with a college degree. With many of today's jobs requiring a college degree, this is the next logical move to make towards selecting a career. Many new students are opting to get their degrees online or least take a portion of their classes through a distance learning program.

These online programs are growing in popularity, but how do they measure up to a traditional degree. In most cases, an online degree is comparable to a traditional college degree. You take all the same classes. It is just the mode in which you take them that differs. The way many people see it; there are actually many advantages to getting your degree online.

If you enjoy learning independently, online classes will work for you. You will have limited interaction with other students. You may have a few conference calls, live chats or teleconferences, but most of it will be all you. If you enjoy interaction with others, you want to consider traditional college classes or a combination of traditional and online classes.

Online degrees are ideal for the student working a full time job. The first reason is they can take these classes anywhere they have access to a computer and they can also be taken when it is convenient for the student. You do have homework due dates and may have test dates, but as long as you have good time management skills it is just a matter of turning course work into the instructor before it is due.

Another reason that online degrees appeal to many people is due to the length of time it takes to complete a degree program. Because you do not have to schedule classes around each other and you do not have travel time, you are able to schedule more classes in a given period of time. Many schools have also gone to condensed classes which allow you take a normal class in about 6 weeks.

Great article. I am all for online degrees. I just graduated with my B.S. in Criminal Justice a few months ago and cannot stress how beneficial it has been. I plan on taking online courses again for my Master's Degree (hopefully at either University of North Dakota or Florida State University). I can't say whether or not I would do a Doctorate's online but might decide to do it if the program is reputable.
