This is a thrilling film to take a dip in. The star actress, Charlotte Rampling, is an aging British author who is beginning to lose her edge as a mystery novelist. It's a little heart breaking when her own literary agent is shaking hands with young blood that wins writing contests while all Charlotte's character can do is smoke cigarettes and mourn her life. Never fear, though, because the agents has not forgotten her yet. In fact, he will send her forth on a venture that more thrilling than Chaucer's drunken stupor that led to his clumsy death. As the protagonist-author searches for inspiration in a French Château, the owner's daughter takes a visit and ruins all the peace and calm a writer needs. Or maybe inspiration doesn't come from peace. Maybe inspiration is soaked with sexual tension and bloody mystery. This is a great film to watch if you enjoy a good mystery that has a depth deeper than most people acquire in their life time. However take in consideration that this is not a film for the easily-dulled mind. A viewer should be open and patient with this movie. Like a glass of wine, there is a certain acquired taste that this film demands.
