When you are a senior citizen, it is painfully obvious that mental capacity can fail just as much as physical capacity. However, like physical strength and agility, you can work to improve and regain mental function and capacity. If you are a senior having problems with your mind, there are several things you can do to improve your situation.

Tour Local Sites
You don't have to travel long distances or spend a lot of money to be a tourist. Take time to visit your local sites such as museums and historic centers. Learning something new about your town is a great way to flex your mind muscle.

Join a Club
Meeting with people that have like interests as you not only improves your mind, but also your social life. If you enjoy reading, join a book club. If you enjoy gardening, join a garden club. There is a club for just about every hobby known to man.

Take a Class
Many communities have senior centers or community colleges that offer various classes. You can continue your education or simply learn a new skill like antiquing or quilting. Taking a class makes your mind learn something new and use areas that haven't been used for a long time.

Work
You may be retired, but that doesn't mean you cannot work again. Of course you don't have to work full time, but some seniors actually enjoy working a fun part-time job. For instance, my grandfather began as a hospital transporter when he retired. He loved interacting with the patients and with his coworkers. Having another job is probably the reason his mind is still strong at 90 years old.

Volunteer
If taking on a real job is too much commitment for you, try volunteering. There are so many things you can do for your community that include volunteer work. For instance, you could tutor students, teach a skill, work at a local library. Each of these volunteer jobs lets you give back to the community while you improve your mind capacity at the same time.

Such a good article. Throughout the years, I've seen too many people drive themselves into despair and lose their oomph once they stopped working, because they felt they no longer had a purpose in life, felt they were no longer needed, became bored and didn't know what to do with their days. In turn, their bodies and minds turned to jello. People have to exercise their brains just like any other part of the body if they're to remain healthy. This includes working on crossword puzzles or video games, even gardening, filling the bird feeder.
