Now on DVD: Weekend at Bernie's

3
I'm really not sure why but my wife and I seem to have a bit of 80s nostalgia when it comes to watching movies lately. This past weekend, we watched Ghoulies and Ghoulies II. And, just last night, we sat down to watch the 1989 film Weekend at Bernie's.

When it came to the Ghoulies movies, we were disappointed. They weren't even close to being as good as we remembered them. And, when we watched Weekend at Bernie's, I figured we would have the same result.

I was wrong; this movie is every bit as funny as I remember it being.

Terry Kiser stars as Bernie Lomax, a business executive who invites two of his employees (Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman) to his beach house because they inadvertently discovered he was defrauding his own insurance company and he is arranging for them to be murdered. However, his associate, Vito, is upset with him for being too careless and sleeping around with his woman so he arranges for Bernie to be killed instead. The two employees find his body but, realizing nobody else knows Bernie is dead, put on a weekend-long charade in an effort to both stay in the beach house and, when they learn there was originally a hit put out on them, stay alive.

The movie relies heavily on sight gags ranging from the dead Bernie being the life of a party, water skiing and still managing to have sexual relations with his girlfriend. Normally, movies require a bit more than that to be successful but I think this is one of the few exceptions.

My favorite character in this film has to be Paulie (Don Calfa), Vito's hit man. He manages to kill Bernie right away but is fooled into believing he is still alive and goes insane as he keeps trying to murder a guy who is already dead.

Final opinion: If you are looking for a simple yet smart comedy to watch, step back in time a bit and watch this movie.

Average Netflix Grade: 3.5 stars out of a possible 5.

My Grade: 4 stars.
